Home, and it is going off

March signaled the end to this years Cape Town trip. It had been a good year with plenty of wind and waves but at the same time was good to be heading back to the UK, as much as it is nice being in Cape Town it can be quite surreal with the inevitable real world waiting at home.

Since arriving back to the UK it has been non stop. I have no van as it is in the garage so have been using my mums smart car (yes, I know) and also use of their old land rover for carting kit around. I’ve also been moving house along with everything I own and have been joining my friends Hunty and Sessionhead with some labouring work, digging out gardens and laying in fake grass. Oh, and I managed to fit in an epic windsurf.

It doesn’t happen often but when it does it really is some of the best sailing you will get on the UK’s south coast. Plus is right round the corner…

I can’t say how good it felt to be home and I don’t think I have had time to think about missing Cape Town since I stepped off the plane. Home is where the heart is and a days windsurfing like this really underlines that.

As always I joined up with Timo who was good enough to give me the heads up that it could be on. This gave me enough time for me to speak to Body Glove and get a new hooded 5/4mm fusion wetsuit which is not the sort of wetsuit I’d thought I’d be needing this time of year, and also enough time to organise a car big enough to get me to the beach and back. And again, as always, he couldn’t have called it any better, it was going off..

The only thing is it was around 3-4 degrees in the easterly winds, but it was sunny so that probably doubled that temperature. I was a little stupid thinking I wouldn’t need gloves or boots, i’d have been alright with the hands but the feet were another story. The first thing I had to do after catching the first wave was to loosen the footstraps as my feet had swelled in the cold water. And after usually riding off your heels and toes that was out the window as it just felt like you had 2 ice cubes strapped to your feet. You had to rely on your knees and ankles to negotiate the board round the bottom and top turns.

There were a couple of friendly local surfers out who seemed to cheer every wave you got and seemed to be having as much fun as we were. One of the most fun waves of the day was a shared wave with Timo linking up our turns one after the other. That was until I span out and managed to sail into each other. Timo thought it was his fault until I fessed up, should have kept quiet. Despite being pretty funny I thought it was the end…..
