Amado, you are concerned as one of the next big talents of Bonaire can you introduce yourself a bit for the people that don’t know you yet?
I’m born and raised on the beautiful island of Bonaire . Last january I turned 17 years old and celebrated my 10th anniversary in windsurfing. On my 7th birthday I started windsurfing, got addicted to the sport and can’t image my life without windsurfing anymore.
What have you been up to this winter to prepare for the 2013 season?
As I live on Bonaire, where we have perfect conditions at Sorobon or at the south-coast, I did not need to travel anywhere. Every windy day I go to the beach and work hard to improve my skills. This year I will attend all the PWA-events and I make sure I’m ready to make my statement. I’m more experienced now and feel more confident among “ the big names”
In the last 2 years you started to compete in your first PWA events, how was this experience and which was the best moment?
My first PWA event was here on Bonaire in 2011.
The advantage that I had was that Bonaire is my homespot so I know the water, the wind and almost every small wave. I was nervous, felt a really small kid among the competitors, but this was the moment where I dreamt about already a long time so as soon as I started my first heat, my nerves were quite and won the first heat ever in a PWA-competition.
What are your windsurfing goals for 2013?
My goal for this year is to make myself known in the freestyle-world. I trained hard this winter and my moves are better, stronger and higher. I will push myself to the limit and eager to score higher in the ranking.
At this moment my equipment is perfect!
I really feel confortable on my Starboard Flare 91 and the new Severne Freek sails. This year I also planned to attend some events outside the tour in the “neigbourhood” to get more competition-experience and become more confident under pressure. Besides making an excellent impression on the water, one can find and follow me on my facebook-page : www.facebook.com/AmadoVrieswijk . I hope that my education-programm Sports & Movements give me some time this year to visit a complete new windsurf-spot somewhere in the world to increase my experiences even more.
This will be your first year you do the whole PWA tour, what are your goals for this tour and will you compete at any other events than the PWA?
My goal this year, like I said before, is to finish in the top 15.
I’m very curious about Podersdorf. This is the only spot which I will visit for the first time. (Hope that the weather is nice / not too cold) Because of attending all the PWA-events this year I make a better chance to climb up higher in the ranking.
Besides PWA-events , I will attend the Aruba Extreme at the end of March on Aruba, and will return there for the Highwinds in June. When back from Podersdorf I will compete at the Curacao Challenge (not only Freestyle but also Slalom) and ofcourse my last year in the Bonaire Pro-kids event here on Sorobon-beach.
And last question. Why should people buy the new FREEK instead of another freestyle sail?
I would recommend the Severne Freek because it’s a really easy to handle sail. Especially the ducking is super easy.
It’s super light and the increase of lift is a big change, comparing it with for example the S-1.
When the wind really kicks in a lot of sails get out of control witch is not the case with the Severne Freek.
