Larger than most of the boards in this group, the Starboard Kode Wave is equipped with two relatively straight MB fins. It offers a third fin box for single fin sailing, although the fin in itself isn’t provided.

On the Water:
Presented at 77 liters, the Kode Wave seems thicker and larger, making it the biggest of the test group. Riding high above the water with its relatively straight twin fins, the Starboard is the quickest to plane and one of the liveliest. In the Carbon construction, it is also the most intense and reactive to foot pressure. This can become technical to handle in very choppy conditions or strong winds. The Kode Wave is fast, with good fin support allowing the rider to position himself wherever he likes on the spot. It benefits from premium fittings and comfortable pads, which boost confidence when it comes to jumping.

In the surf, it behaves like a real skate. The steering is very directional and allows to hold speed in long bottoms turns although it requires more wind. Despite the liveliness, it’s not selective and will perform equally well whether it’s a carving bottom or a flat, skidding top turn. The grip is good, especially when the rails are wet as it tends to slide when kept flat. However, this was most appreciated as it allowed to vary the pleasures and try different kind of maneuvers and styles.

Verdict:
Formidably efficient in side-onshore conditions, Philip Köster’s Kode didn’t disappoint in the surf or in the jumps. We recommend to tonic and powerful riders who will be able to enjoy more of the board. Sails up to 5.3
