TWS Slalom Technique Series Ep 1: Sail Trim

The first episode of the TWS Slalom Technique Series deals with one of the most important things for a slalom sailor, trimming the sail. Jordy Vonk and Marco lang show you step by step how to rig the North Sails Warp and what you can do to make it even faster. These tips work for pretty much any slalom sail, so make sure you check it out.

Sail trimmingThere are several important things to focus on when trimming your slalom sail to make sure it is as fast as possible. After sliding in the mast and putting the extension at the right position you can start to look at the downhaul and outhaul of the sail. These are two things that determine how the sail reacts to the wind. Using the top hole of the outhaul will give you more power, using the lower hole will give you more control. For the downhaul you can look at the top of the sail to see if you have put enough tension on the sail. On the North Sails Warp there is a maximum downhaul dot which indicates up to where the sail should be folding away, many other brands have got similar indications. To make you get everything out of the sail, put some tension on the tack strap but not too much. Also tighten the battens until you do not see any wrinkles next to them anymore.
