The OTC are delighted to be supporting the British Sailing Team this summer by holding free taster sessions for the RYA Sail for Gold Roadshow event here at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy on Sunday 14th August.
If you’re feeling inspired by our athletes at Rio 2016, this is a fantastic opportunity to come and try windsurfing and sailing for free, with sessions running throughout the day from 09:30 until 15:30.
Whether you come by yourself or bring the whole family, a team of qualified instructors from the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre and the OTC will be on hand to take you afloat and give you an introduction to sailing and/or windsurfing. All sessions are free, and all equipment will be provided at no extra cost.
Alongside these taster sessions, everyone will have the opportunity to meet members of the British Sailing Team, enjoy some refreshments and learn more about the sport before watching the Olympic windsurfing (RS:X class) medal races on the screens. The racing in Rio will be shown on the screens in the WPNSA at 17:00 when racing is scheduled to start.
Local Weymouth windsurfers Bryony Shaw and Nick Dempsey hope to be competing on this day. Bryony will be looking to add to her 2008 bronze medal, whilst Nick will see if he can complete the full set, in his bid to add 2016 gold to his 2012 silver and 2004 bronze.
From 14-18 August, the RYA Sail for Gold Roadshow will travel around the UK, to England, Wales and Scotland, with plenty of on and off-the-water activities to get involved in at each stop. Members of the public are welcome to join each event, with taster sessions and sailing activities on offer during each Roadshow for those inspired by our sailors’ endeavours.
