Maui spring has sprung
It's been that time of year where the Entire windsurfing universe floods into the valley Isle of Maui in Hawaii for photoshoot season. (Much to the lament of locals it would seem) Like other teams, Severne's have flown in from all corners of the globe to catch the remaining trickle of winter swells that coincide with the beginning of the summer tradewinds. For Severne this was Iballa Ruano Moreno, Nayra Alonso, Dany Bruch, Boujemaa Guiloul Timo Mullen and Scott McKercher.(Who’s scribbling this)
Boujemaa's back in action this year, fit and ready. Relishing being back on island, it has reflected in his sailing. He’s looking fluid in his turns and making a lot of goiters, 360’s etc etc. (Those dread locks are getting long however, as he’s always throwing his head back in airs trying to shake the water out. ) I’m not jealous☺
He got there early in the season and has been on every session that's been happening. The unfortunate thing has been it's been a bit off a lack luster season with regard to wind. Before we arrived. The two weeks before we arrived had two mass clinics running, with not one day of wind for the duration of their stay. It was a bit sad to see them packing up as we moved into their accommodations, as I've met a few of them before and they're complete wind junkies.
Dany hopped of the plane for the first time frothing like a grommet when he got off the plane to a large swell which had awoken Jaws. Unfortunately no legrope or fins had him frustrated watching from the cliff. He was then out at Hookipa the next day on a SUP, when a collision with his rail and fins left him with massive bruising and a deep cutting his foot. (Furthering his frustrations) He persevered for the shoot however, popping stitches and doing all the wrong things for healing, but got through it and got the job done with some impressive hacks and belts.
A sweetener at the end of his trip was that he finally managed to get a taste for Jaws, getting dropped in on not by one, but three other guys☺ Gotta love Hawaii.
Nayra was back from a leave of absence last year and was glowing like a lighthouse with the lovely Lily in her arms. She was yet to get back on the water whilst I was there, as Johnny (Her sub half) was in china, but she was pretty keen to get back into it.
Iballa was out on Maui again while Daida was studying finishing off her physio course back in the canaries. Run ragged between two shoots of windsurf and stand up paddle she was up pre dawn and either on the water or driving till dusk.
She was on windsups, freeriding gear, posing as a hood ornament on the front of boards, you name it she did it. Somehow managing to maintain that perma smile, even when super tired. A true pro.
But it was out at Hookipa that show’s us what she’s about. Using her blades to full effect, her full rail power turning was impressive along with launching into some massive airs.
Timo Mullen is still there as we speak. Unfortunately we missed him and his energy whilst the majority of us were there, but photog John carter is probably relieved for the back up having been on the island for quite some time now. No doubt Timo is crackin sections and refining his 3'0's that he was getting down pat towards the end of last season.
As for myself, there were only a few sessions in the couple of weeks I was there. But at least I got out there and managed to brush off the starboard tack cobwebs.
I do love Hawaii, even though it’s the full busy season that I only get to go to these days. Gone is the luxury of being able to hang for a couple of months a year, purely to focus on your wave sailing, but stil very fortunate to get back there each year to savor the fruits.
These days it’s not just the sailing, it’s reconnecting to everyone on island who live there, and also those who blow though like the trades.
Everyone’ss loving the new gear and there was a lot of go downs with no breakage of spars or sails.
Good times...........( Note. people shots are from this year, but sailing shots are from last years shoot.) So as not to give too much away:)
