Pitsford Pirates team of young windsurfers head into their fourth and final Team15 Midlands Inter-Club Challenge Series event in Birmingham this Sunday (2 September) knowing their third consecutive regional title is already in the bag.
But having once again qualified for the national Team15 Champions Cup grand final for the third year running without sailing an inch - round three being cancelled due to a lack of breeze in July - the young guns will use the opportunity to get back racing at Edgbaston this weekend as they begin their preparations for their national crown bid.
Pirates wrapped up the regional title with an event to spare having won the opening two rounds of the series, giving them an unassailable lead with one event to come.
Now they are already looking forward to trying to make 2012 the year they are crowned the UK’s best young windsurfing team by claiming the Team15 Champions Cup for the first time in October. The Champions Cup final sees some 100 sailors from nine other regions do battle for the accolade of being Britain’s top Team15 outfit.
Jon Sweet, Pitsford Pirates Team 15 Co-ordinator, said: “We haven’t actually had a competitive event since June so everyone is really looking forward to getting some serious racing under the belts again at Edgbaston and sharpening their racing skills.
“It was such a shame the third event, which was actually at Pitsford Reservoir, couldn’t go ahead. The organisers tried their hardest to get a start away but it didn't happen. On the plus side, we had a great day with the kids, lots of team games, paddling and fun races as well as a windsurfing freestyle workshop and competition.
“But now we are all getting our racing heads on again so that we can go into the Champions Cup final on a high, hopefully with another event win under our belts.”
Team15 is the RYA’s youth windsurfing development programme, enabling kids aged 15 and under to learn new skills and develop under the guidance of specialist RYA coaches whilst having fun with their mates.
This year’s Inter-Club Challenge Series events are being held under the banner of Sail for Gold, the nationwide London 2012 initiative from sailing’s national governing body, the RYA, celebrating Britain's unmatched Olympic sailing heritage and inspiring more people to get out on the water. Sail for Gold aims to bring the buzz of the Olympics as close as home to possible for everyone, wherever they live.
Supported by industry leaders Tushingham/Starboard and Neil Pryde, Team15 was set up by the RYA to help make windsurfing more accessible and appealing to youngsters at a grassroots level.
Fun and informal training sessions take place at Team15 clubs all over the country for kids up to the age of 15. Kit can be borrowed from the clubs and the cost of sessions is kept low.
