Why Puerto Rico is so good for windsurfing

Its one of those places thats not an obvious choice for freeride or freerace windsurfing. There arent any rental centers, so traveling with your own gear is a logistical challenge for most windsurfers.

Despite that, its a phenomenal destination for windsurfing. Like any spot influenced by trade winds, the wind strength depends on the season. It starts off lighter in December, January, and February, then improves from March through the summer.

Some spots can only be reached by boat, like the island shots here in the video, but theyre totally worth it. Others are easily accessible by car, with parking close to the water. Youll often be the only windsurfer out there, which can feel intimidating for less experienced riders.

But once youre comfortable with that, youll get incredible freeride and freerace conditions, epic scenery, and boardshort weather. In the winter months, there are also spots with solid swell - and when wind and waves come together, it can get absolutely epic.

We made a full YouTube series about our trip to Puerto Rico - check it out on my channel.

I truly believe Puerto Rico deserves a dedicated windsurf center and more windsurf tourism: great weather, steady wind, easy-access spots, and a fantastic culture.
