Day 1
Was kicked of with some short board wave action in the morning from Inverallochy Beach with Coach Robin Nicol taking to the water up skilling those of the team who have had some experience out in the chop working on stopping, picking and dropping in. Our smaller ones working with Danny Hawthron hit the water with the determination to catch their first wave.
The afternoon we headed to the event location to get some training in before event day with the techno sailors working on harnessing techniques which would play a vital role during the competition the next day and our Grom Fleet running a mock event for the next day.
Day 2
Brought us some of the best windsurfing conditions of the year so far. The sun was out and the wind was on. The Groms hit the water in the morning with Danny and based themselves in the harbour using an out and back course run from the beach. With many of them competing for the first time the nerves started to kick in with a few just wanting to wind surf. This changed by the afternoon with many asking “When is the next race, I want to win the next one”.
The bigger fleets headed out into the bay to race on a triangular course with a short upwind leg, a full reaching downwind leg and a hook finish. Throughout the day we managed 4 races consisting of 3 laps of the course. Everyone on the course had their planning skills put to the test. The ability, speed and standard of the teams, was phenomenal. It was clear that everyone was having an amazing time on the water and great sportsmanship was displayed between the sailors, with people stopping mid race to help each other with kit issues.
We also may have had the most important race of the day after our BBQ lunch.
The Team 15 adult race. We paired up an Team 15ers with an adult in a race which may have been the most hotly contested of the completion. Out and back to a buoy relay race with a team high 5 finish. With many protest hearings after we crowned our champions it was a great spectacle.
