After 1 week of competition in Sylt in a mixture of all kind of conditions and 5 eliminations completed, we are delighted to see 3 of our riders finishing in the top 5 proving the Mach2 sail dominance on the race course.
We caught up with the riders to get their impression of the event and how they feel about their results.
Gunnar Asmussen - IFCA Vice-Worldchampion Slalom:
“ I’m really happy with my 2nd place here in Sylt, especially if you consider the mistakes I made. On the windiest day on the 5.5 Mach2, I did an over early in the semi-final which put me out of contention for the event win.
Overall I’m very happy with my performance this event, especially on the 9.4 and 8.6 where I managed to secure a 1st and 2nd place with. It’s also great to see my young teammates Damien Cervera and Martin Moller Hovda coming up in the ranks, we had some great fights on the race course together and looking forward to more in the future. “
Martin Moller Hovda finishing 4th after a great comeback:
“I am super happy with the result. I was going for the top 10 and ended in fourth position, just 1.3 points behind the third place with my 2nd place in elimination 4 being the highlight of the event.
It was an event with all kind of conditions. From 9 knots of wind and flat water to 40knots and big waves. Making this event really showed who was the best sailor out there in all kind of conditions.
During the event, I was using my Mach2 5.5, 7.8, 8.6 and 9.4 with top speeds and easy handling in all the different conditions we had. Stoked on the gear and looking forward to Fuerteventura already!”
Damien Cervera finishing 5th after a long fight for a podium spot:
“It was a long week of racing for my 3rd time here on Sylt. Coming here I was really looking forward to some technical racing in wavy and choppy conditions. Which we did, with 5 eliminations in a wide variety of conditions. From Nuclear winds for 5.5 to onshore 7.8 weather and side of conditions for 8.6 and 9.4.
I’m happy to be in the top 5 even though I was looking good for a podium spot during the event. Everyone in the top 10 was sailing on an extremely high level so I’m overall most happy about the consistency I could show this event.
This shows my sails and board combination is working perfectly in any kind of conditions and give me confidence for the rest of the season.
Now it’s time to go back training at home and focus on the next PWA event in Fuerteventura end of July! “
Next stop for Slalom will be the PWA Gran Slam event in Fuerteventura
