It's a long way to Newgale beach in West Wales from, well, anywhere really. But Newgale is a bit special in that catches the N and S winds that blow down and up the Irish Sea when the rest of the S coast and even N Devon gets no wind.
I haven't sailed there for a few years but it's a beautiful beach surrounded by the rocky Pembroke coast and on Sunday 23rd it was sunny with a good SSE breeze and a small manageable swell.
The wind at Newgale is always patchy and the water sluicing around in the quite powerful break means it is rare to get out planing, so you really need a board with good float even when it is pretty windy once out. So on Sunday my 5.3 and Quatro Super Mini 103 (more on this board in another post) were a perfect match.
It was an easy session with some good waves in the sets that built to overhead late in the afternoon as the wind swung slightly cross off (no photos of this unfortunately).
My fantastic wife endured the 6 hrs traveling and snapped a few shots that give an idea of the conditions earlier in the afternoon.
One of the nice things about going to Newgale is seeing Steve and his son Archie. Last time I saw Archie he was just learning to use a harness. He's now 13 and was ripping down the line! I also watched Steve have easily the best wave of the day with multiple turns and some solid hits on the breaking sections of the overhead wave. Nice! Can't wait to go back.
