I am currently 2 weeks into an ultimate summer road trip with my Dad and the Dog. The plan was to travel down the coast of France, Spain and Portugal.
In search of wind and waves. Making the most of Europe whilst it’s still so easy to do so. We caught the ferry from Plymouth to Roscoff and as far as windsurfing goes the first week passed without much to report. There was no wind so we met up with some friends and stayed in the lovely surf town of Le Dossen. kept busy surfing, slacking, SUPing and walking.
Keeping an eye on the wind charts, Galicia is NW Spain seemed the place to be so after our friends left we spent 2 long days and over 20hrs driving. Mostly it went smoothly. Apart from a hot, sticky traffic jam near Bordeaux the scenery was lovely, especially through the mountains where you pass over hundreds of stunning bridges and tunnels as you make you way across the mountains.
Eventually we arrived at our first windsurfing destination and went straight on the water to blow away the long drive. It was called Doninos- 3-4ft waves and a cross-shore wind made for wobble and ride conditions. It was fun but the waves were difficult to predict, especially without any local knowledge and a fuzzy head from sleep deprivation!
We spent a night here then moved further west where the wind looked stronger to a spot called Traba. Popular with kiters, we spent 2 days windsurfing here in marginal cross-on shore wind and waves, parked up next to the beach.
The next spot on our list was described as being “at the end of the world”, right near the cape Finesterre and very remote. It was supposed to be windier than Traba, so along with some German windsurfer’s that had a similar plan, we all made tracks there. Each place we went seemed to get more beautiful. Rolling green hills, forests and an almost deserted stretch of golden sand and turquoise water greeted us. As the tide dropped, the wind and waves picked up so tentatively the group of us rigged up and walked to the beach. This was by far the best session of the trip. Cross-on wind and 5-6ft waves made for fun jumping and riding. Especially with the waves nicely spaced out.
We will stay here for a few days. The wind looks as if it may not be quite enough. Then perhaps head to Portugal and see where the wind takes us….
