UKWA Cup Event 4 was held at Weymouth over the weekend 16-17 July, the forecast for the weekend was looking promising three days of wind and sun so headed down to Weymouth Thursday evening ready to sail on Friday.
However, the wind gods must have changed their minds last minute as by Friday there was no wind! The forecast for Saturday was light and Sunday was not looking good at all.
Saturday arrived bright and sunny but light wind so we waited til midday before being called out, for an up wind and down wind course was set, and the formula fleet had the harbour to ourselves for the first two races while the other fleets had gone ashore for lunch which meant the wind was clear and steady.
Race 1 wind was light 10 knots had to work to get planning but once you were planning everyone was fine but the guys on 11 meters where finding it hard going at times the wind was ok as long as you went looking for it.
I managed a first in race one with Tim Gibson 2nd and Chris Bond in 3rd, Race 2, a first again, this time, Tim and Chris changed places with Chris 2nd and Tim 3rd wind was much the same as the first race by now the other fleets were back out on the water ready for their races, the race officer kept as out for another two races.
Race 3 and the wind was a little more tricky this time as the wind was really light, so we had to try and stay away from the other fleets as you did not want to get stuck in dead air but a sea breeze was also threatening to come in, and you did not want to miss out on the stronger wind.
Again, it went well with a first followed by Chris and Tim again in 3rd, Race 4 and I had a port and starboard crash with Bob Ingram on the start line and by the time we had sorted ourselves out we both headed to the opposite side of the course to the fleet. I had to do a penalty turns as I was in the wrong then thought the wind was dying so tacked off Bob kept his cool and kept going which gave him the race win, his first ever win, Chris was 2nd, and I got 3rd.
Sunday had very little wind all day although the wind did pick up in the afternoon and we were called out very late in the day. There was no way we would make it out to the start before the end of racing so it was back to the beach.
In the Youth fleet, Harry Sharrock took his first win over James Batty who was struggling in the lighter winds but maybe another race things would have changed but well done to Harry
Results overall 1st Dave Coles – Severne Starboard 2nd Chris Bond – Point 7 Starboard 3rd Bob Ingram – Gaastra Starboard
So with four events completed and sixteen races which are a bit down on previous years, eleven races to count after discards, pretty pleased with the year so far as now counting eleven firsts. Let’s hope it carries on for the rest of the season but pleased with the board and sail set up this year. Now its summer break time before the next UKWA event in Pwllheli 27-28 August so we are heading to Silvaplana in Switzerland for the Swiss Championships and Marathon
