Will Mackaness Award

I was surprised and honoured to be awarded the ‘Will Mackaness Trophy For Commitment To Sport’ at The Wey Valley School’s annual sports presentation evening this year.

The award is in memory of Will Mackaness, who also attended Wey Valley School and Sports College like myself. Will lost his battle against a brain tumour in 2008. Will was an avid sportsman who took a full and active part in all aspects of school life, despite undergoing intensive treatment.

The trophy is awarded annually to individuals in recognition of their achievements and commitment to their chosen sports. I am so proud to add our sport, windsurfing, this year as windsurfing was also a passion of Will’s.

The Will Mackaness Trust was set up in 2008 at the Wey Valley School following Will’s death. The trust’s aim is to give more water sports opportunities to young people in Weymouth and Portland, so they too can experience the fun and exhilaration of windsurfing, sailing, paddle boarding, kayaking and swimming.

To date, the trust has enabled hundreds of young people to participate in these activities and is an amazing legacy. There are many fund raising events held throughout the year for the trust so please keep an eye out for them and come along and support a very awesome charity.

See you on the water, Scotty
