On the Water:
The 2015 Starboard Futura 124 can be compared to the JP-Australia Super Sport, even though the boards feel completely different from each other. The Futura 124 feels a bit bigger, a bit wider and a bit longer. However, whether you are planing or not, it is extremely stable on the water. Once planing, it doesn't ride as high and flat as an iSonic. Instead, it sits lower on the water, with a nose that is slightly lifted above the water. At full speed, the chop sometimes hits the bottom of the board around the front footstrap area, but it does so very softly and the board absorbs the impact to come out of it even faster. The Starboard Futura, with its extremely comfortable footstrap positions, accelerates and can be pushed to its top speed with ease, in all wind conditions.
The Futura is an exception in this freerace test as it doesn't require a lot of skills: it offers a comfortable stance when in the footstraps and is very stable in the arc of the jibes, especially full-speed power jibes. The other freerace boards on test required more effort to control but came out quicker out of the jibe, if you had the skills to push them.
However, in stronger wind conditions, when we tried to get the most out of the board, the Drake Venom 48 cm G-10 fin provided with the board felt quite big when paired with the 7.0m² cambered sail.
We also noticed that, due to the deep deck recess, the boom needs to be positioned higher. It does however offer a more upright sailing position.
Verdict:
Together with the easy jibing characteristics, the Futura 124 proves to be a sporty board for windsurfers without a racing background who would like to windsurf as fast and as simply as possible.
