A Severne Seven And A 100……….. Check This

So as we enjoy some Summer sailing on the bigger kit I had the pleasure of testing the 2016 Fanatic Ray 100 on my Severne NCX 7.0 the other day.

Some people believe that once you get to over 6.5mtr sails you must be on a 125ltr board or higher. I don’t agree – just look at the top Slalom sailors in the UK. Sam Latham very often is on a 100 ltr board with his 7.8mtr sail and finds it gives him more speed and control as he is powered up much better on a big sail and a smaller board.

So I tried this configuration out the back at Hunstanton on a speed strip known as Toppers bank. Yes admittedly I was a the biggest sail of any sailor that day because I was having a ‘testosterone moment” but the 7.0mtr 6 batten NCX dealt with the ever growing wind magnificently, just spilling excess gusts with ease – its all in the downhaul you know…… too much and it de-powers the sail, too little and it hold the wind in the sail making it feel confused and snappy. All you adjustment should be on the Outhaul not the downhaul.

I’ve not jumped on Slalom style board for a year or so, so was not sure how I would feel about this sports model windsurf board…….OMG – I loved it!!!. Its a fantastically comfortable sail and with the power-a-plenty from the 7.0mtr NCX was a sweet as a nut to control. This board really is a top performer just as a Summer blasting board with Gybe qualities like a softer railed board, but with a bullet top end speed no-one that day could get close to me.

The combination really brought out some very good (and not so good as Keiron saw!) lay down gybes going in fully powered and coming out pretty powered too.

So before you rule out the sports boards as you larger kit choice jus
