PWA Tenerife World Cup - Day 7

Grandstand Finale on Super Sunday as Fernandez overhauls Stone and Daida wins again.

The last day of the 2015 Tenerife PWA World Cup saw a grandstand finale as Super Sunday saw an exhilarating conclusion to the event. The wind continued to howl all night and was still gusting in excess of 40 knots first thing this morning, whilst solid sized waves continued to roll into El Cabezo. Jaeger Stone was looking to defend his single elimination crown in order to secure a maiden victory, but Victor Fernandez had other plans as he defeated the Australian twice to be crowned the champion and head to the top of the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Daida Moreno saw off the challenge of her sister - Iballa Moreno - to make it two wins out of two for 2015 as she extends her lead at the top of the rankings.

Men's Double Elimination - Winners’ Final

Victor Fernandez defeated Philip Köster in the first heat of the day to setup a final against Jaeger Stone. The Spaniard knew he’d have to defeat Stone twice if he wanted to take the title and it looked like he would have his work cutout as his opponent opened with a fully planing tweaked pushloop and a big one-handed, one-footed backloop. However, the impact from the tweaked pushloop cost Stone dearly as it turned out he’d snapped his board. Luckily, Philip Köster was on hand to quickly sail a new set of gear out to his teammate, but Stone then seemed a bit rattled and out of sync with the waves. Fernandez in the meantime landed a perfect double forward and a stylish one-foot backloop, whilst linking together a couple of solid waves to force a super final.

Men's Double Elimination - Super Final

The Super Final was extended to 18 minutes with two waves and two jumps to count as in the final conditions looked to be deteriorating slightly. However, the conditions picked up again to provide a scintillating conclusion to the men’s main draw. Jaeger Stone looked to be back in the groove as he wracked up two waves in the excellent range to slightly outscore Fernandez in the waves department. Stones’ best effort included a now trademark, gouging taka, which he backed up with a couple of vert snaps. However, Fernandez swung the momentum in his favor with another perfect double forward and a massive tabletop forward. The Spaniard also produced a couple of brilliant waves with full rail turns and takas right in the critical section. Stone tried to respond with a double forward effort, but couldn’t stop Fernandez from stealing the event title from his grasp.

Women’s Double Elimination

Iballa Moreno saw off a stern challenge from Amanda Beenen in Heat 34 to set up a rematch with Daida in the winners’ final. Iballa had looked in terrific form in the heat prior as she posted a score of just over 30 points having landed a huge pushloop and a sick frontside aerial with several fluid turns. In the final, Iballa again looked in terrific form on the wave as she combined full gouging rail turns with vertical snaps to earn two solid wave scores of 8.88 points and 6.12 points. Daida, meanwhile, was her usual dominant force in the air as she landed a huge, fully tweaked, tabletop forward before adding a stylish backloop. So with 4 minutes to go, Iballa led the waves, whilst Daida led the jumps. However, at this stage Iballa was missing her second jump and only needed a score of 4.94 or more to force the tie into a super final. The reigning world champion desperately hunted for a ramp, but when she did she couldn’t quite stick her backloop or massive stalled forward effort as Daida maintained her unbeaten record to extend her lead at the top.

image

Amanda Beenen was in determined move today and it paid off at she defended her top three place against Sarah-Quita Offringa in the battle for third and fourth. On the way to doing so Beenen boosted a huge forward to earn her first finish on the podium, whilst also pushing Iballa Moreno all the way as she tried to progress into second place. The twenty-eight year old went for broke as she landed a sick tabletop forward, but unfortunately Iballa was in an unstoppable mood at that point.

Whilst that concludes another epic event in Tenerife, it’s not quite the end of the action as eleven of the world’s best sailors battle it out in the Dunkerbeck Eyewear Exhibition Session at Siam Park this evening from 7:30 PM (GMT+1). Make sure you tune into PWA World Tour.com to see all of the incredible action live.

Day 6: Storm force winds bring El Medano to life as Jaeger Stone stands firm at the top

Arriving at the beach at 8 AM this morning it felt more like England than Tenerife with thunder and lightning making for a stormy and unsettled start. Thankfully though, things soon cleared up and the conditions which followed were nothing short of exceptional and only improved throughout the day - allowing the world’s best wave sailors to produce one of the most radical days of action ever seen on the PWA World Tour as storm force winds and solid waves hit el Cabezo. Jaeger Stone leads the way after an outstanding performance in the single elimination, which saw the Aussie rewarded with his first victory. Stone will now look to defend his title against either Victor Fernandez or Philip Köster tomorrow after an amazing day of action.

image

Men's Single Elimination

There was no stopping Jaeger Stone today as he left a trail of destruction in his wake. The Australian’s wave riding was on a whole other level compared to anyone else and he also produced some of the standout jumps of the competition so far to book his place in the final after firstly taking down Philip Köster followed by Ricardo Campello. Against Campello, Stone landed one of the biggest, if not the biggest jump of the day with a rocket, double kicked backloop and then proceeded to tear the waves apart - including one 9.12 point wave as he combined super aggressive gouges with a critical taka to accumulate the highest heat score of the single elimination - 33.12 points.

image

Men's Single Elimination - Winners’ Final

Victor Fernandez was waiting for Stone in the final and after a tricky start both sailors found their groove. Fernandez, who is usually so pinpoint with his execution of jumping required three attempts to land his opening jump, which was a perfect double forward - on his first attempt his feet came out of the straps after the first rotation, whilst he didn’t quite land the second effort with his usual style. Stone responded with a big one-footed backloop, before completing his jumping card with a planing pushloop and sailing away from a double. Fernandez may have held the upper hand in the jumping department as he too landed a massive one-footed backloop, but it was Stone who dominated the waves yet again with seemingly consummate ease and unrivaled style and it was his penultimate wave which overhauled the deficit and earn his place at the top of the podium for the first time in his career. The twenty-four year old rotated through a taka right in the critical section before backing it up with a couple of vert snaps on the whitewater to clinch the single elimination crown.

image

Men's Double Elimination

The conclusion of the single elimination saw windy conditions, but the wind strength in the double was on a completely different planet. Whilst, you’d have been forgiven for thinking you were in England this morning, you’d have been forgiven for thinking you were in Pozo and not Tenerife this afternoon as winds gusting in excess battered el Medano and sent even the biggest guys running for 3.4m² and 3.7m².

image

Jumping Masterclass

Philip Köster was a man on a mission this afternoon after finishing joint fifth in the single. Three weeks ago, Köster produced a world class jumping performance in Pozo and today he gave a jumping masterclass again to win five consecutive heats - firstly defeating Adam Lewis followed by Marcilio Browne and Robby Swift with ridiculous planing double forwards, monstrous pushloop forwards and huge one-footed backloops.

image

Jumping King versus Wave Riding King

Köster then faced local boy Alex Mussolini in what proved to be the one of the most exhilarating heats of the day as both sailors went toe-to-toe with each other. Köster is regarded as the King of Jumping, whilst Mussolini is considered by many as the Wave Riding King and that’s exactly how the heat panned out. Köster opened the heat with a trademark ankle-dry double forward to earn perfect 10s from the judges, before patiently waiting for the right ramp to go one better with an absolutely ridiculous pushloop forward, which was both incredibly high and completely dry. However, whilst Köster was killing it in the air, Mussolini was fully in the zone on the wave as he landed a monstrous frontside 360 before racing down the line and executing a radical taka to earn 10.12 points for a single wave. The frontside 360 King then went even bigger and better with a monumental air 360, which he landed fully planing, but unfortunately couldn’t back it up - even so that single incredible maneuver earned him a further 9.38 points to leave the tie beautifully poised. Unfortunately though the Spaniard couldn’t find a solid second jump and despite his best efforts could not stop Köster from progressing.

image

Ricardo Campello was waiting next for Köster and as it played out Heat 33 was a fitting way to end the day as two of the most radical jumpers in the world signed off the day in style. Campello out jumped Köster on this occasion as he landed a monstrous pushloop forward and a text-book double in quick succession. However, the Venezuelan/Brazilian, just couldn’t find the wave scores he required on this occasion as Köster marched on by 0.88 of a point. Of course Köster showed moments of pure brilliance again with another trademark double and a vertical carving turn into a taka, but Campello may feel he missed an opportunity that was very much there to be taken.

Victor Fernandez awaits Köster in the next round in a huge heat, which should be run tomorrow morning.

image

Adam Lewis also enjoyed a fine comeback through the double as he too won three heats in a row to move into the top ten. The Brit impressed with his aggressive approach to wave riding and was consistently awarded waves in the excellent range as he took down Julian Salmonn, Alessio Stillrich and Aleix Sanllehy before running into Philip Köster.

image

Women’s Double Elimination

The opening three heats of the women’s double elimination were also completed in the extreme conditions and Caterina Stenta continued to impress with her fluid approach on the wave, which earned her victory against Lina Erpenstein, whilst Caroline Weber advanced from the B-side of Heat 26.

In Heat 27 Waka Nishida was able to defeat Nicole Bandini, whilst Ingrid Larouche dispatched of Arrianne Aukes to book her place in the next round. The two girls performed similarly in the air, but the Canadian outperformed her Dutch counterpart on the wave to progress.

Waiting for Caterina Stenta in the next round was Sarah-Quita Offringa and the two women enjoyed an intriguing battle, but in the end it was Offringa who came out on top after landing a big pushloop and excelling with her wave riding. Stenta again had to excellent waves but couldn’t match Offringa in the air. Meanwhile, Alice Arutkin successfully navigated her way into the next round after claiming victory against Caroline Weber.

Day 5: Only the top 8 men left standing ahead of Super Saturday.

As expected the fifth day of the event saw more action on the water as the men’s single elimination resumed in 20-30 knots and waist to head high waves. After another three hours of competition only the top 8 men now remain ahead of what promises to be an action packed day tomorrow.

image

Men’s Single Elimination

Dieter van der Eyken gave Thomas Traversa a bit of scare in Heat 4B, but the reigning world champion emerged unscathed in the end despite the Belgian’s maestros best efforts. Van der Eyken produced the best wave of the heat but Traversa responded by landing a sick bolt upright tabletop forward to advance by 1.13 of a point.

image

Adam Lewis couldn’t have made a worse start to his opening round, but through no fault of his own. The Brit suffered a broken mast upon landing a backloop right at the start of the heat and faced an uphill battle to progress with Ben Proffitt making a quick fire start to the heat. Proffitt landed a clean one-handed backloop before scoring his best two waves on his first two attempts to really put Lewis on the back-foot. Lewis responded with a big and stylish one-handed backloop, but couldn’t quite find enough to overhaul his countryman’s lead.

image

Philip Köster survived a first round upset by the skin of his teeth against Julian Salmonn, who almost claimed a huge scalp on his PWA Wave World Tour debut. Salmonn dominated the wave scores as he used his local knowledge to full affect, but unfortunately missed out by 0.88 of a point after Köster still managed to land a perfect double forward, despite the marginal conditions.

image

Moritz Mauch defeated Graham Ezzy by less than a point in Heat 6A. Mauch was his usually fluid and dynamic self on the wave as he accumulated an 8.5 point wave followed by a 7 point wave, but only had a 5.88 point table forward count, which left him vulnerable to his American counterpart. Ezzy landed an amazing no-handed backloop to earn 8 points, but in the end it wasn’t quite enough.

image

Victor Fernandez continued to look extremely threatening today as he continued his excellent form from day four to defeat Omar Sanchez in Heat 9B. Fernandez looks to be keeping more speed on the wave than almost anyone else in the fleet and used it to devastating affect with brilliant turn after brilliant turn, whilst Robby Swift saw off Alessio Stillrich in the A-panel with an efficient display.

Alex Mussolini was on his game in Heat 10A to keep the threatening force of Leon Jamaer at bay and book his place in the quarterfinals. The Spaniard landed a big one-footed backloop before rotating through a radical taka to advance. Meanwhile, Thomas Traversa, found his form, which included a sick frontside aerial to dispatch of fellow Frenchman Jules Denel.

image

The final two second round heats saw the heat duration extended to 18 minutes to allow for the slightly patchy wind and the greater length of time between sets - after Heat 11 had to be canceled once. In the end Marcilio Browne and Ricardo Campello emerged victorious and will now face each other in a blockbuster quarterfinal after defeating Florian Jung and Moritz Mauch, respectively.

image

Two of the most dynamic and fluid wave riders in the world faced each other in Heat 12A as Jaeger Stone took on local boy Dany Bruch. The two sailors were almost inseparable as both landed textbook one-handed, one-footed backloops and recorded wave scores in the excellent range. However, Stone swung the tie in his favor with his third to last wave as unleashed through a radical taka, before backing it up with a couple of aggressive vertical snaps to progress.

On the B-side of the panel, Philip Köster was once again pushed all the way, this time by Ben Proffitt. The Brit made the better of the waves, showing excellent selection and execution, but couldn’t quite hold onto his lead as Köster advanced by less than 2 points. The two-time world champion again landed an amazing double forward, which made all the difference, but he may need more tomorrow if he wishes to go further in the contest.

image

The forecast looks as though El Cabezo should be pumping tomorrow, so with this in mind the skippers’ meeting has been called for 8:30 AM with the action commencing from 9 AM. Day 4: Daida Moreno crowned the single elimination champion in Tenerife.

Against the odds, Tenerife produced the best conditions of the week so far, despite a lesser forecast compared to yesterday. The morning started quietly with light winds, but at 3 PM, the wind and waves arrived to allow the competition to resume. Daida Moreno continued her winning start to the year to take the women’s single elimination crown, whilst the men’s main draw also began after the conclusion of the trials.

image

Women's Single Elimination - Winners' Final

The women’s winners’ final saw four women - Daida Moreno, Iballa Moreno, Steffi Wahl and Amanda Beenen - battling it out for the single elimination title. Iballa kicked off the final in spectacular fashion as she launched into a radical one-footed forward to set the tone, whilst Beenen, Wahl and Daida all landed forward loops. Iballa Moreno quite often gets the upper hand in the wave riding department, but today it was Daida who dominated as she unleashed several aggressive, vertical frontside smacks, which made all the difference as she maintained her 100% record for 2015 - for now at least. Meanwhile, Iballa finished second with Beenen completing the podium at this stage - narrowly ahead of Wahl in fourth.

image

Men's Trials

Arthur Arutkin produced a fine display in the opening heat of the trials to progress into the main draw as he impressed with his stylish approach on the wave, before Dieter van der Eyken advanced from Heat 2 with a clean one-footed backloop and some excellent waves, whilst Loick Lesauvage became the youngest sailor in the main event at 15 after winning the final trials heat. Meanwhile, Marc Paré clinched the last place in the main draw after winning the repechage round.

image

Men's Single Elimination

Alessio Stillrich produced a fantastic display in Heat 1 to cause an upset against teammate Klaas Voget. The young Spaniard opened with a trademark tweaked pushloop before consistently picking up the best set waves to put Voget on the back foot. His German rival landed a high, completely one-handed backloop, but was slightly out of sync with the set waves and was powerless to stop Stillrich advancing as the twenty year old delivered vertical turn after vertical turn. On the B-side of Heat 1, Robby Swift comfortably advanced against local boy Valter Scotto.

image

Victor Fernandez looked hugely impressive in Heat 2B as he opened up his account with an 8.5 point wave. The Spaniard combined stunning vertical turns, whilst keeping his speed to impress, whilst also managing to land a perfect tabletop forward despite the then fading wind to defeat Lock Lesauvage. Meanwhile Omar Sanchez dispatched of Martin ten Hoeve - who was unlucky with the light winds, but you can take nothing away from Sanchez who was able to make the most out of the conditions.

image

Heat 3 was started but had to be canceled with the conditions diminishing and the fleet were released shortly afterwards. They will now meet again tomorrow morning at 9:30 AM for the skippers’ meeting with the first possible start at 10 AM. The latest forecast looks as though there could be more action tomorrow, whilst the forecast for the weekend continues to improve at this stage. Day 3: Women’s Single Elimination gets underway late in the day

Much of day two of the 2015 Tenerife PWA World Cup was spent waiting as the wind and waves once again teased the competitors for much of the day. However, in the early evening the waves started to improve and the decision was made to start the women’s single elimination just before 6 PM.

With the wind being slightly flukey the women were given 16 minutes to show what they can do with their best two waves scores to count in 4 man heats - top two from each heat progressing.

image

Women's Single Elimination

The first heat of the day saw Ingrid Larouche battling it out against Steffi Wahl, Lina Erpenstein and Sarah-Quita Offringa and in the end it was the top two seeds Offringa and Wahl who safely progressed as they made the most of the waves on offer with fluid wave riding.

image

Heat 10 saw the reigning world champion Iballa Moreno in action for the first time and any fears about her knee injury were dismissed as she produced an excellent display. Iballa comfortably advanced after making several perfectly timed, frontside, vertical smacks, whilst Greta Benvenuti secured second place ahead of Waka Nishida and Caroline Weber.

image

Amanda Beenen made use of her extra local knowledge to triumph in Heat 11 and book her place in the semifinals, whilst Alice Arutkin saw off some stern competition from aspiring wave sailor Nicole Bandini to also advance.

Current PWA Wave World Tour leader Daida Moreno made no mistake in her opening heat of the contest as she clinically dispatched of her rivals by delivering vertical snappy turns right in the pocket of the wave. However, the fight for the final qualifying place saw an intriguing battle with less than a point separating - Arrianne Aukes, Caterina Stenta and Justyna Sniady - with five minutes to go. In the end it was Sniady who managed to grab the last place in the semifinals as she scored five points with her final wave to advance.

image

In the first semifinal Iballa Moreno continued her fine form to once again prevail in dominating fashion as she linked together more fluid waves with her usual effortless style. Meanwhile, Offringa and Wahl enjoyed a great duel for the last spot in the final. At one stage just quarter of a point separated the two women as both delivered slashy turns of their own, but this time around it was Wahl who managed to exact revenge for her defeat in Pozo against Sarah-Quita Offringa.

image

The second semifinal was started on two occasions, but both times unfortunately had to be canceled with the wind dropping in the late evening and the waves becoming more messy as well.

The forecast looks lighter for tomorrow than today, so it may prove difficult to resume the contest, however as always anything can happen. The skippers’ meeting has once again been called for 9:30 AM with the action commencing from 10 AM. Make sure you tune into PWA World Tour.com to follow all of the action as it happens via the PWA live stream and live ticker.

Day 2: Marc Paré comes out on top of the youth's as the main event remains on hold

There was plenty of hope ahead of the second day of the Tenerife PWA World Cup, but unfortunately conditions never quite materialized enough to get the pro contests underway. Earlier in the day the single elimination of the youth’s contest was completed as Marc Paré managed to come out on top.

image

Men’s Youth

The final of the youth’s contest saw Marc Paré lining up against Noah Vocker, Julian Salmonn and Alexandre Grand-Guillot as the next generation of wave sailors were given fourteen minutes to show what they could do in relatively light, tricky conditions.

Vocker made the best start to the final as he instantly landed an excellent backloop, before Paré quickly followed suit, whilst Grand-Guillot and Salmonn landed forwards. At this point Salmonn started to take control of the heat as he consistently picked up the best waves and produced fluid turns to earn 6 and 8.5 point wave rides respectively. However, Paré fought back as he landed a better backloop, before linking together the wave of the final to earn 9 points, which consisted of him landing a stylish taka and a backside slash to snatch the victory away from Salmonn, who finished in second place. The podium was completed by Vocker.

image

The wind continued to tease throughout the day with a large percentage of the fleet being tempted out onto the water at some point, however the wind and wave gods never quite aligned meaning the trials and main events remain on hold. Sailors were released at 5 PM and will meet again tomorrow morning for a skippers’ meeting at 9 AM - with the action commencing from 9:30 AM. Forecast wise the latest models look fairly similar to today, but hopefully with a bit of luck we’ll see the start of the contest.

As always you’ll be able to stay up to date with all the latest news and action by tuning into PWA World Tour.com - here you can find the PWA live stream and live ticker.

image

Day 1: The wave fleet are rigged and ready to kick start the action tomorrow

The inaugural day of the 2015 Tenerife PWA World Cup saw the wave fleets registering for the upcoming week of competition, whilst the opening three heats of the youth’s single elimination were completed before the tide became too high for the remainder of the contest to be concluded. With the conditions not improving the sailors were released at 4 PM as attention turns towards tomorrow.

image

Men’s Youth

Marc Paré looked to be in good form despite the tricky conditions as he won the opening heat ahead of Marino Gil. Paré was able to land a perfect backloop, whilst also linking several snappy turns with the waves on offer.

In Heat 2 Tim Van dam Sanchidrian came out on top as he and Noah Vocker both landed clean backloops. However, Van dam Sanchidrian made the better of the waves on this occasion after making some stylish frontside snaps.

image

The final heat of the day saw Julian Salmonn achieve the highest wave scores of the day as the eighteen year old made the most of his local knowledge to link several excellent fluid waves together. Alexandre Grand-Guillot qualified for the semifinals in second place.

image

Iballa Moreno sailed yesterday but unfortunately suffered a slight knee injury. The reigning world champion will see how her knee is in the single, but it’s not the ideal start having been previously injured in Pozo too.

A few days ago the forecast didn’t look particularly promising but thankfully things have taken a turn in our favor. The forecast for tomorrow now predicts winds of 20-27 knots on local forecasts, so we are hopeful of a full day of contest being completed, whilst Wednesday also looks promising too.

With the possibility of the wind arriving early tomorrow morning the skippers’ meeting has been called for 8:30 AM with the first possible start at 9 AM. Make sure you tune into PWA World Tour.com to follow the amazing action as it happens via the PWA live stream and live ticker.
