The 2011 AWT Makani Classic featured a stacked field of competitors and some challenging conditions for the final stop of the AWT tour at Hookipa Beach Park. Although it was a challenge to complete, the final of the men's expert division was a memorable 30 minute battle with a hard fought 4th place result for Kai Katchadourian on his Flywave 85 and Blacktip 5.3. On the last day of the holding period, in some pumping surf and super light wind everyone saw Kai take it to the lip many times to the roars of the crowd.
Nat Gill was also busy taking down many contenders along his way to the top 8, going hard early and often as he did everything he could and more considering the light winds. Francisco Porcella looked good also, but he suffered a back injury in his warm up, and after winning his first heat despite the injury, Francisco was forced to withdraw due to the pain. Nick Dudet did great sealing the deal on a long year on the AWT juniors and amateur divisions with his inspired performances during his first trip to Maui.
We'd like to thank the AWT for putting on a fantastic show both on Maui and the mainland. Simmer Style was proud to help in support for the tour. Photos by Jimmie Hepp. Riders. Kai Katchadourian and Francisco Porcellawww.americanwindsurfingtour.comAuthors: SIMMER STYLE - world news
