Cornwall Classic - Day 2

Cornwall has a reputation for delivering consistent conditions and this year it has done it once again. Friday teased the Pros with light winds and small waves but by Saturday morning the Gwithian wave gods arrived.

71 competitors attended a safety briefing and guide to comp delivered by BWA Chairman, Nigel Treacy and Head Judge, Ian Ross. By 10.30am the first Youth competitors were assembled and ready fro action.

This year BWA trialled a coloured rashvest system which enabled the judges to identify every rider and every move.

In the Pros single elimination Phil Horrocks took the honours with solid scoring waves. Brother David was in second place for a short period until he suffered a broken mast to end in fourth. Ben Proffitt was hungry to take a win for the Championship but had to settle for 2nd. With the possibility of a double tomorrow there may still be chance for him.

Lewis Merrony returns to the event after a break and Gregg Dunnett looked strong in his first BWA comp. Regulars Will Barrett and Nial Melon also make the final here. With the light disappearing all four will have to wait for tomorrow for the final to run.

Favourite for this event is the old hand Dave Ewer who has several BWA wins under his belt. But with an oustanding performance in the recent Tiree Wave Classic, Kyle McGinn is another hot favourite. Daniel Ramsden has been polishing up his jumps on clinics recently and local lad Justin Dennington knows this break better than the rest giving him a great advantage. As with the Ams fleet there was not enough light to finish this comp and the Masters will have to wait for tomorrow for their final.

Coming to the final event of the year there is nothing between the top four youths who are sitting with equal points. first in the Irish event, Nial Melon made the trip to Cornwall to battle against Jack Petit who recorded a first place in Wales. The mighty Freddie Ide is also firing with a great win at the recent Tiree Wave classic which saw him demolish several amateur sailors twice his age in a mixed comp. James Arnell-Smith attended his first BWA event and must be pleased to make the final with some great wavesailing. The final has run and the results are in.....but the competitors will have to wait until the results are announced tomorrow!

Justyna Sniady and Sarah Kellett continue their on-water battle for the Championship title. Both have plenty of podium finishes under their belts and both are capable of a win here. Megan Gayda has had a series of disappointing results in previous events but really seams to be getting her freak on in Cornwall with some great sailing. Regular attendee Ping Ling also sailed consistently to the final and has her eyes on a trophy. As with the Youths this final has been sailed but head judge Ian Ross is cruelly making them wait for that announcement tomorrow morning.
