The Final Video

Duncan Coombs, the head judge of the PWA windsurf tour, said that Barcelona’s Alex Mussolini can challenge Phil Köster as the number one wave windsurfer in the world. Mussolini, the 28-year-old world no.3 came agonisingly close to beating the German 19-year-old double world champion, Köster in the semi-final of the 2013 KIA Cold PWA world cup.

“Mussolini is a big threat to Köster,” Coombs said. “He was pretty angry about losing that sem-final. His wave riding is very strong. He had the best wave ride of the day, with a wave 360, a taka and a cutback on one wave – it was a perfect 10. There’s not much more you can do on a wave.  In the semi-final he had three points on Köster in the wave riding, I mean that’s a lot, if he’d had the jumps he would have beaten him. I think he crashed doing a big double (forward loop) in training a few years ago, so maybe that is something to work out. But he has what it takes to be at the top.

“I don’t think we’ve seen so many heats go down to the wire. Pretty anyone in the last 16 was dangerous.”

Coombs also said that Almerimar’s Victor Fernandez Lopez, the world no.2 should not be downcast after being knocked out in the quarter-finals by the eventual winner Marcilio “Brawzinho” Browne, the 24-year-old Brazilian.

“I don’t think he (Fernandez) should feel bad, if you lose to the guy that goes on and wins it, there’s no shame in that and Browne had one of the best and highest scoring heats of the day against him – he had two long great wave rides.”

Köster, German rider is still leading the world cup tour after winning the first round in Tenerife. He who was born and raised is Gran Canaria meaning Spain can lay claim to producing the best three wave windsurfers in the world.
