I recently travelled to Wales with my friend Jack to meet up with Alfie with a plan to search for a few reef breaks further up the west coast. It was nice to stay with Alfie at his house down there, all their vegetables are home grown and are provided for year round. Basically get to eat like a king with the healthiest food around. The only snag was that my dogs lead snapped and he almost ended up killing one of their geese. They only have 2 left from a family of 12 spanning back 15 years so was quite important that they remained alive! The goose survived, with a bit of intervention, thank god! Lets move on…
The reefs were ok, there was wind and waves but definitely wasn’t epic. It was one of those days were it looked way better than it was. The waves seemed to move away from you on the reef and lacked a bit of power and the bigger sets were quite choppy. Still though, those reefs definitely can be good just with a bigger swell perhaps.

We also got to sail Alfie’s local spot in starboard tack. It was pretty light and gusty and not what we were there for really. Was sunny though and nice to mix it up a bit.

The last day had pretty horrible conditions. I ended up at Newgale and was all a bit hectic. It was cold, raining, mast high, onshore and too windy to hold on to my 3.7m. Not exactly dream conditions but still good to get some practice in, I think it is good to sail in nasty conditions sometimes as competition isn’t always dream conditions. Anyway, watch the nice clip that Alfie put together, says it all….
