The Coquet Crushers, Kielder Kestrels and Derwent Devils are ready to do battle with Pugneys Pirates (Wakefield) and the North Lincs Invaders (Barton on Humber) as all the junior windsurfing teams gather on the starting line next Sunday. The visiting fleets are sure to receive a bright and sparkling welcome to the south bank of the Humber this year as the North Lincs and Humberside Sailing Club (NLHSC) celebrates its Diamond Anniversary.
The Coquet Crushers and Kielder Kestrels did well in round one of the Team15 Championship last month when the fleets met at Derwent Reservoir. 15 year old Gustavo Takiguchi won the 5.8m class for the Crushers and 12 year old Archie Dodd won the 3.5m class for the Kestrels.
There is everything to play for in round two and Pugneys Pirates, who are current RYA North Zone Team15 Champions, will be sending a strong team to the Humber on Father’s Day.
Team15, which is now in its 12th year, is an RYA initiative set up to make windsurfing more accessible and appealing to youngsters at a grass roots level. The young windsurfers, all of whom are 15 years of age or under, will be sailing for their local team. The team with the best score at the end of the summer wins the RYA North Zone Team15 Inter-Club Championship earning a place in the National Final, the Team15 Champions Cup.
North East teams taking part this year include:·
- Derwent Devils (Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club)·
- Coquet Crushers (Coquet Shorebase Trust)·
- Kielder Kestrels (Kielder Water Sailing Club)
Fun and informal training sessions take place at T15 clubs all over the country for kids up to the age of 15, which are run weekly by specialist RYA coaches. Kit can be borrowed from the clubs and the cost of sessions is kept low.
