West Kirby Warriors win again despite June hail

West Kirby Warriors, a team of young windsurfers, had a second win over their nearest rivals, the Hollingworth Hunters from Rochdale on Saturday in the second meeting of 2013 RYA West Zone Team15 (T15) Inter-Club Championship at West Pennine Sailboard Club.

Unlike the first meeting when three points separated the teams, this time the gap had widened to six points. The teams are battling for a place in the national final the Team15 Champions Cup.

There was a good turnout with 32 sailors from four clubs but the weather was unbelievable for a June day: just 12 degrees with big squalls and wind. In one start sequence it started to hail!  Then a spell of brief sunshine gave respite before it bucketed down again.

Due to such a good standard of sailors in the bigger fleets, an 'Olympic' style course was chosen with the excitement of a slalom, reaching finish.to make it more tactical.  The course meant more tactic were needed from the sailors and start lines were run from the shore making it great for the spectators, parents and coaches to see how the youngsters gained advantages.

West Kirby's Oliver Lloyd, age 12 in the 4.5 fleet dominated the fleet with an impressive bullets of all firsts. Team-mate Matthew Jubb from the 4.5 fleet for West Kirby had some great finishes, overtaking other competitors right on the finish line to get four second places and one in third.

It just goes to show the race isn't over until you are over the line In the absence of Ike Bradley Baker who was at a National freestlye event, Warriors' hopes lay with Maddy Hughes in the 5.8 fleet. She was in 3rd place at lunchtime but goodness knows what she had for dinner as she won every race in the afternoon with some great performances.

Frances McNab, 15 years old from West Kirby Warriors said "Ive been racing for Team15 for seven years now( since I was eight) and can't believe this is my last year.  I'm loving the series this year as its so competitive between us and Hollingworth.  It's so close its making it really good racing"

T15 was set up by the RYA to help make windsurfing more accessible and appealing to youngsters at a grass roots level. Fun and informal training sessions take place at T15 clubs all over the country for kids up to the age of 15, which are run weekly by specialist RYA coaches.

The T15 inter-club championship takes place regionally over the summer adding a competitive edge and race training for those keen to hone their skills.

Kit can be borrowed from the clubs and the cost of sessions is kept low. To get involved with Team15 and locate your nearest local club visit www.team15.org.uk or contact the RYA 0845 345 0400.
