Name: Dan berry
Nickname: dan
Years sailing: 30yrs
Sail Number: ka 212
Sponsors: severne.................
Q.Have you been doing much freestyle?
A. Not really, occasionally ill try something new if I'm really hyper or bored but generally I'm more than happy watching those guys. It still blows my mind how technical some of that stuff is, I'll sit there rewinding tricks just trying to make sense of it in my head.
Q.Are you heading to Green Island to compete in the Australia Freestyle Nationals in June?
A. Um...........no.
Q.Is there any new talent coming through the NSW scene?
A. Not really, we are all pretty crap. The best is probably brett Goodwin and he's in his early 50s now, it's quite sad really. Haha nah there's a few of the older crew still pushing it and a couple of kids comin thru now as well. Young olly from wanda is coming on strong but he's a blood nut unfortunately so not sure what'll end up happening with him;) good on him for keeping his chin up though. I see robbo giving him some support from time to time, they'll get thru it together;)
Q.What do you think of the new format for the NSW wavesailing association events for next season?
A.The new format sounds fun, basically go sail all weekend then somehow they pick winners at the end. From what I understand its kind of like a cross between mambo and taranaki formats. Essentially a really long expression session followed by some kind of super session. Also it's more separate events as opposed to a series as such. Anyway a change is as good as a holiday so fingers crossed. Also from what I understand no one will actually have to sit down and judge.........gold!
Q.Severne has traditionally had a smaller presence in NSW. Do you think this is changing?
A. Severne is definitely becoming a much more prominent force on the water now around nsw, I've noticed it slowly picking up the last few years but this year it's definitely exploded big time.
Q.How’s the switch to the S-1 been? How would you describe the effect the sails have made on how you approach wave sailing ?
A. I've loved the S-1s and I found out about them completely by accident. Me and a mate had similar customs arrive around the same time and wanted to try each others board to compare. Of course having different bases and being incredibly lazy we just swapped rigs and all, the S-1 ( which was on murrays board) blew me away, I couldn't believe how light is was. Anyhow that got me thinking and here we are.
Anyhow since getting them I'm finding myself concentrating on my board and my line a lot more as the sail seems to disappear, almost becomes a lesser part of the equation on the wave, once you depower it in the bottom turn it really does disapear. Also as a side note I've found myself enjoying jumping again due the swing weight, really fun to chuck around.
Q.Any comments on the Enigma boom ?
A. To be honest when I first saw them I though "a booms a boom and this didn't look much different" but then you start noticing and adding up all the little improvements it really does set itself apart. Improvements like the longer head clamp ( bigger contact area) and the invisible seams, the actual boom length is printed as opposed to the length it has been extended ( genius!! Haha) and the diameter which is marginally smaller than any previous boom I've had and its awesome. The grip you can get on it this thing is insane.
Q.Can you describe the weight / strength properties of your rig and how that influences your sailing ?
A. The weight I love! By far the lightest sails I've ever used but also with a decent amount of low end power so still good with the jumps. In the past I've found myself being forced to make a choice between rigger fuller for low end power or flatter to lighten up the feel, I find myself being able to have both at the same time with the S-1.
Q.Have you been working on any new stunts?
A. Haha been working on a clew first gu screw with an air gybe in the middle, it's either that or a switch stance half blackie. I thought I had invented it til I saw Bjorn trying on in a movie from the early '90s. Back to the drawing board. Not sure what they look like but the feel awesome if you hit them sweet.
Q. Did you win a Boomerang at the nationals?
A. No, I tried to steal Brett's one but then realized it was for 3rd and put it back haha
Q. Any trips planned?
A. Would love to get back to Maui, haven't been for ages. Otherwise maybe the desert next year. Really looking forward to winter in nsw now though, big starboard tack windang in the ice arghhhh, love it!!
Q.Most visited websites?
A. Hahahahah is that a serious question;)
Thanks to Jodi from Whitecaps for the photo.
