Already a reference in the freerace segment, the Starboard Futura has evolved for 2013 with new cut-outs and a thinner tail. Its full carbon construction is visually strong and hints at a top-of-the-range product.
On the Water:
On the water, all the acclaimed features responsible for the board’s success are still there: accessibility and performance, without requiring any particular expertise or physical input. This year again, the glide-to-accessibility ratio is quite striking and the shape is freer on the water thanks to the new tail design.
The 2013 Futura 111 Carbon is a light and stiff board that remains comfortable and compact while providing exhilarating accelerations. It goes through the chop remarkably well thanks to an excellent control and trim. The board is quick to plane and the power isn’t disproportionate, which keeps it human. During the jibe, the arch is comfortable and efficient in the exit.
The only downside worth mentioning would be the front straps’ positioning, that didn’t win unanimous support in overpowered conditions, but it’s nothing unacceptable.
Verdict:
Starboard offers, this year again, a Futura that is the reference in the freerace category thanks to the perfect balance between performance and technical/physical accessibility. It’s a board that won’t disappoint! We recommend using it with sails ranging from 6.2 to 8.2. It also exists in Wood technology.
Pros: Performances ; Control ; Accessibility ; Accessories ; Glide ; Efficiency in the jibe
Cons: May need an additional front footstrap insert
