St-Barth Fun Cup 2013 - Event Report

Day 1

The 2013 edition of the St. Barth Fun Cup is now over, with an all-Starboard podium! From the 1st to the 3rd of February, world-class sailors like Björn Dunkerbeck, Antoine Questel and Taty Frans and local amateurs gathered in the idyllic island of St. Barth in the Caribbean Islands for 3 days of long distance slalom competition and good times.

On the first day, competitors were greeted on the beach by 15 knots of wind and warm temperatures. The organization was able to run 2 heats before the wind died. As the local of the event, Antoine Questel anticipated the wind drop and took his bigger setup while Taty Frans taunted everyone else by rigging his 7.6m². Antoine Questel ended up winning the heat, followed by Taty and Björn Dunkerbeck who had an unlucky bad start. In the second heat, the competitors rectified their mistake and everyone was out on their big gear. However that didn't stop Antoine Questel from grabbing another win and Taty Frans from getting on the podium. Björn did his best but wasn't at ease in such light winds and stands in fourth position before Day 2.

On Saturday, the wind was more generous and picked up to 20 knots and allowed for 3 additional heats for a total of 5 heats. Obviously very comfortable on his home spot, Antoine Questel managed to grab 2 other bullets while Björn Dunkerbeck had the last one. Taty Frans impressed everyone again with his speed, talent and consistency. Pierre Mortefon was however pushed off the podium by a faster and more regular Björn. In the women's division, Delphine Cousin scored first with Starboard team rider Sarah-Quita Offringa right behind.

After 2 days and 5 heats, the standings looked like this:
1. Antoine Questel (Starboard / Loft Sails)
2. Taty Frans (Starboard / Maui Sails)
3. Björn Dunkerbeck (Starboard / Severne)

4. Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / North Sails)
5. Edson Genipa from Guadeloupe

Day 3

On Sunday, the wind didn't show up and no racing was held. However, competitors hit the water on their SUPs and played around, entertaining the onlookers and organizers before the prize-giving ceremony and the legendary party. All and all, the Saint-Barth Fun Cup 2013 was a success and everyone is already looking forward to 2014!
