The down wind marathon will be sailed in approximately 25 kilometers. The last years of competition saw from 200 to 400 starters, many entering to try to complete the grueling course and claim a share of the $25,000 prize pool.
The Lancelin Ocean Classic 2013 will be conducted over four days, and includes two windsurfing events (wave sailing and the marathon), plus the addition of exciting new sports.
Wave sailing is the more spectacular discipline with over 70 competitors sailing in four man heats trying to out manoeuvre each over with the highest aerials or radical wave riding
There will be a kitesurfing with two events: a downwind marathon and a very exciting expresssion session/big air competition to entertain the crowds.
The Lancelin Ocean Classic started in 1986, with a few enthusiastic windsurfers and a handful of competitors who recognised that the WA coastline offered some of the most spectacular wind and water conditions anywhere in the world.
The event attracts 3000 to 5000 visitors to Lancelin including world class competitors from around the world. Björn Dunkerbeck, world speed sailing record breaker and world champion has been confirmed for 2013.
