Hot Sails Maui is proud to welcome this awesome French windsurfing family to our team, composed by Titouan, Julien, Jean-Phillipe and Laurence.
Hi Titouan & Julien, you are both young windsurfers (9 and 11 years old), sailing with Hot Sails Maui Sails. When did you start windsurfing?
Titouan: I started windsurfing when I was 4 years old in Bandol (South of France), close to Brutal Beach, with a 1.6m Hot Sails Maui and a Starboard Rio.
Julien: I started windsurfing when I was 5 in Moulay Bouzerktoune (Morocco). I started with a very light 1.6m Hot Sails Maui and a big starboard Rio.
Titouan et Julien: Most of the time we sail in Normandy in different spots called Petites Dalles and Veulettes Sur Mer. But we travel a lot across the whole France, depending on the wind we sail at Siouville, Brutal beach, Leucate and Perpignan.
What do you like about windsurfing?
Titouan: I really enjoy water sports, and also discovering new spots and new places where to practice. I also make new friends everywhere on the beaches. For example this week I met Dax, Jeffrey and Kyla, the Hot Sails Maui Family. It was great even though I don’t really speak English very well! But all those meeting would have never happened without windsurfing!
Julien: I really enjoy water sports, and the fact that I can sail with my family.
Where is your favorite windsurfing spot and why?
Titouan: For the moment Moulay Bouzerktoune is my best spot, because I don’t know other spots yet with such good wind and waves! I wish I could go to Hawaii!
Julien: Moulay bouzerktoune is my favorite spot too, because I started there and because there’s always wind and waves.
What’s your preference: jumping or wave-riding?
Titouan: I prefer jumping, because I like tricks, and I’d love to make rotations now.... This summer I tried a back loop: the wind was so strong that I succeed my jump! But I did a huge wipe out while falling down.... Once I tried to make a big jump, pulling on my back foot and I started a front loop.... But once again I wiped out and I hit the mast with my nose!Julien: I prefer jumping because I like air tricks. I did my first backloop this summer, and also Donkey kicks.
What is your most favorite memory of a personal windsurfing moment?
Titouan : I remember once I was on Boujmaa’s shoulders while sailing… That was awesome! And also this summer wind was blowing at 45 knots one day, and I was sailing next to Boujmaa… We were only three on the water.
Julien: My favorite memories are when I sail with Boujmaa Guiloul.
Where was your scariest windsurfing experience?
Titouan: Last year I just started to sail with a little board. While my feet were in the straps, I felt on my back under the sail, and I couldn’t take my feet away from the straps. I stayed under the water for a while and I was a bit scared because I couldn’t breathe anymore... My father arrived just in time to help me!Julien: This summer in Moulay, I took a big board and I sailed far away from the coast. My father was filming me on the coast, and during a failed jibe, my fins got stuck between my sail and the wishbone… I couldn’t make any waterstart. So I stood up on my board and I shook my arms in the air for somebody to help me. Then a German sailor saw me and came to give me a hand. Lucky me I was saved!
What are you doing when you’re not windsurfing?
Titouan: I do surf, windskate, hiking and tennis.
Julien: First of all I go to school, then I have free time to do windskate, hiking too, skate. When I am on a spot I love surfing or paddling.
These young sailors are starting to make a bigger impact on the windsurfing world with their videos and pictures they are an inspiration for all old and young. We look forward to seeing how they develop in the coming year.
