A good forecast combined with the quest for a new spot gives most windsurfers an adrenaline rush. Alexis Mykoniatis, a North Sea local, spent some days in Greece and got to sail (and ride) a not so well known spot…
“Traveling into the unknown….
Actually i did not plan this as a windsurfing trip but when i visit my family i always try to bring some windsurfing equipment with me. September is not the best month for wave equipment in Greece since the steady Meltemi stops blowing.
But by combining Google maps with a precise weather forecast you can be pretty sure to find a nice wave spot even in a country like Greece, which is not really known for it’s side shore conditions.
Past week i had the luck to visit the beaches of Pelion since we were staying at a place nearby. The outcome was a real blast not only due to the unexpected good conditions, but also because of the friendly local Surfers and Windsurfers. What they told us was that we should visit in winter …. keep dreaming by the sight of these waves made by a half day of wind.
Spot info: Mount Pelion is about 1600m high and has an effect on the prevailing wind conditions what makes it a bit tricky to get consistent sailing conditions. In order to go wave sailing the wind should blow side shore (NW). If it turns slightly on- or offshore it gets gusty and drops near shore. If your lucky the waves will still keep coming.
In that case you will be glad if you have brought a bigger board for that extra flotation or even your surfboard. With 68 liters and a 4.7 my water time was pretty short.
Cheers,Alexis”
