The Kiwi windsurfer completed the journey to raise funds for the Westpac Chopper Appeal, a life saving rescue choppers network. Speddingsailed more than 100 kilometres equipped with GPS and mobile phone.

"After several weeks of unhelpful weather the days are starting to get longer and the spring equinoctial gales are arriving. Last weekend was my first blowout for a while so I just went out and had a blast", explains Bruce Spedding.

The experienced windsurfer headed across to Evans Bay, turned back, headed up towards Point Howard and returned. Lulls and wind gusts forced several unwanted decisions.

"I stopped at the Rugby Club to check my GPS, couldn't read the distance, so I kept sailing anyway until the wind dropped. Came home and checked the GPS to find I'd sailed 105km! Just enough", added Spedding.

Bruce sailed the equivalent of crossing Cook Strait about four times and a half. He sailed 100 kilometres at an average speed of 31 kilometres per hour. The maximum speed was 45 kilometres per hour.
