Christmas Holiday Sessions – Severne S-1 Pro Test
Posted on 6 January, 2016 Jonny Gambell
Christmas Holidays are great for me because it gives me a chance to get down to my Old Hunstanton house and get out on the water! I was up for about 10 days and I managed to windsurf almost every one. Except Xmas day, which was unfortunately not very windy During the holiday we managed to get a few awesome flat water sessions out back on the bar. I got out on all of these days and made the most of the perfect freestyle conditions. I was sailing
my 4.4 Idol LTD most days and I was super powered up. This was a perfect opportunity for me to practice Spock Culos. I was sailing out a nd then tacking and on starboard tack continually practising the Spock Culo. Firstly I couldn’t get the second pop and kept just crashing but by the end of the day I managed to get some really close attempts with the pop and rotation – I was so happy! Now I’m just looking for the next flat water day to continue practising.
Last weekend I got to Hunstanton and thetide was just beyond the groynes and it was MEGA windy! Neil rigged up his 4.4 and he kindly lent me his 4.0 Severne S-1 Pro. What a lad…:) I rigged up and got out on the water straight away. At first if I’m honest the sail felt very different to my regular sails. However after about an hour of sailing and tuning the sail to how i liked it I really managed to tune myself into the sail. From then onwards the wind dropped off a bit and I was loving the sails! They were mega light weight and really powerful!
Overall, after about 4 hours on the water, sailing in chop and on flat water I really got on with the sail. It is a lovely sail for just generally sailing around, doing the occasionally jump or gybe. A perfect sail for your freewave or wave board! When the tide went out I was trying some freestyle on the S-1 and I was pleasantly surprised on how they performed. I thought it was a really nice sail that had a lovely soft and springy feel to it. It was really easy to duck and had great power for double moves such as double Spocks and other spock variations. The only downside I could think was that at the end of a move it pulled quite hard. For example at the end of a Spock 540 it pulls you off your feet quite unexpectedly, if you don’t control the power.
Unlike a freestyle sail which I think are very forgiving and fills out to control the power during a move.Other than this I think this was an AWESOME sail! From basic freestyle to general bump and jump sailing it is FANTASTIC! It’s light-weight, durable and really powerful. If you are prepared to pay the extra money for this sail you will love it! Its a brilliant sail and you will not regret it – TRUST ME!
See you on the water…Jonny
