Jake Schettewi reports:
The Aloha Classic started out great with a big swell and wind. I was already in the pro event which made me happy to compete with the best windsurfers in the world. I made it out and now my focus was doing the best I could in these challenging conditions. I didn’t pass and was in the double elimination later in the week, so I was happy to be able to give it a second try. During the double I had world champion Philip Koster in my heat which was going to be difficult. I gave my best effort in the challenging conditions, but I was unable to make it against these great competitors.
It wasn’t until the weekend until they started the youth. We had side off conditions and good sized waves. I had some challenging heats, but was able to make it to the final by the end of the day. The wind died and the contest didn’t start again until Wednesday when they started the amateur. I sailed my best against the challenging and more experienced sailors, but was happy to pass through my heats.
Later in the day, they ran the youth final and this was the moment I had been waiting for all week. I had two good waves to start out with and then waited for better ones so I could improve. I got a couple more waves that lined up well and I was able to do some good turns and aerials. When I came back to the beach, they announced the winners and I was beyond happy to have won.
The next day, they continued with the amateur, and I made it to the final where I was against amazing sailors including Brian Talma and Pascal Hardy. I went out and sailed an ok heat, but was already happy to be sailing in the final against such amazing sailors. We sailed in the morning, so we waited until the end of the day until we heard the results. I was thrilled to get second behind Pascal Hardy who won first. It was an exciting event, and I was honored to be part of it and also happy with my results.
Aloha and see you soon,Jake
