Neil States His Claim to a NEW flat water Heaven…….
Posted on 5 November, 2014 Neil Greentree
So it was about 12Noon today when ~I got the text from Frank Titlow that Wells was rockin on a Northerly. I knew there was wind today but thought the window of decent wind too small to go out, but Frank informed me it was 25-30mph N at Wells with High Tide around 5PM. This meant a long walk out to the outer bar and some Parallel sailing along the Wells/Holkham beaches…….. could be nice I thought.
I got up to Wells car park around 2pm and rigged my NEW Severne S-1 Pro 5.2 and my Fanatic Freewave Textreme 86 equipped with K4 fins which I have testing of late (more about that on the next post). I started my walk out directly against the wind up the Wells channel which was full but not yet flooded. The problem with the Wells channel on a Northerly is that the current of water coming into the bay is 3-4knots which reduces the wind power by the same…..not good!. As I got about half way up on the eastern side of the channel I noticed that the other side there was a break in the channel wall allowing water to spill into a lagoon the other side running about 100mtrs out (North) from the normal Holkham beach line. This area is out of the channel so has far less current (1 knot if any) so I would benefit from the full wind strength. The Northerly side of this was a sharp bank which made the water mirror flat on the windward side. I sailed across and through the gap watching the depth all the time.
Then I looked into the distance………… OMG!!!. The Northern bank of this lagoon was approx 600mtrs in length and the water absolutely flat!! The lagoons width was about 40mtrs, easily enough to have lots of fun on flat water carve gybing, duck gybing, fully planing step gybing on mirror flat water with plenty of space and after dipping in on several occasions to test the depth it is at least 0.7mtr deep almost all over.
It was simply bliss!!……… powered up with no chance of grounding out the K4 fins and with such flat water you could focus on the transition you wanted to do. As time went by the Holham end (easterly End) started to small clean ramps, perfect for some lovely downwind ‘pop jumps’, then back onto mirror flat water for your gybe.
So there you are – I am officially stating my claim on this NEW flat water location naming it Perry’s Heaven after my very close friend paul perry who sadly passed away earlier this year from cancer. He loved these flat water spots where you just crank up the power and blast down flat water for 600mtrs then slam a gybe for the hell of it!.
Perry’s Heaven really is that good my friends. If we get a Northerly wind where we will be sailing the tide in there is no other place to try. Get there 3 hrs before high tide and make your way out……… you really wont regret it!!
