The 2017 Futura 117 features an aggressive shape and comes with top-class slalom fittings: ultralight, hydrophobic adjustable footstraps and a top-of-the-line Drake Slalom DW fin. It is the widest and shortest board of this test group, with a domed deck under the feet and a recessed mast track area.
On the Water:
The Starboard Futura's racing DNA is obvious as soon as you step on the board, with potential for efficiency. Its iSonic heritage is noticeable straight away, as it transforms every little breeze into acceleration. Board with the smallest quoted volume of the test group, the Futura is nonetheless the first to get planing, with a hull that efficiently provides lift and power, even at low speeds and in light winds. Once it gets going, it's like sailing on an air bubble; the Futura flies over chop, feeling extremely light and reactive under foot. Worth noting that despite being the widest board of this test group (77.5 cm), it does have the narrowest tail (46.0 cm vs 51.0 cm on average in this group).
Even though the stance is really similar to a racing stance, the deck - particularly under the feet - is slightly less domed and a bit flatter for more comfort. The Drake UltraLight footstraps provide an immediate response while being extremely precise but at the slight expense of comfort on long rides or for sensitive riders. The result of all these characteristics is a board that goes very fast in a straight line while feeling very reactive and direct but stable and composed. The jibe is just like the board: fast and precise, allowing for all types of aggressive turns.
Verdict:
The Futura 117 delivers exactly what it promises: an efficient and straight-forward board for performance without compromise. It is one of the best freerace boards in this test group thanks to its dynamic style and accessibility. The quality of its performance, both in light and stronger winds can be taken for granted and helps you to make the most out of your sessions.
