With the Morocco PWA World Cup now officially confirmed for the women's fleet the start of the season is now under a month away with the event running between 1st-7th April. With a world title to defend we caught up with Iballa Moreno (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) - who has won the Women's PWA Wave World Tour for the last 4 years - to gain her thoughts on a new addition to the calendar and how she's feeling ahead of the start of the season. 

Hey Iballa, how’s the winter been for you and what have you been up to?

The winter has been ok. Lucky I do a lots of watersports and I’m able to be in the water everyday.

The event in Morocco has just been confirmed for the women - how do you feel about this new addition to the calendar?

I think its great to have a new event. The only thing is that we didn’t expect it and it wasn’t in our training program. But I think it will be awesome!! And great to see Boujmaa and Morocco supporting women’s competitions.

With the event starting on April 1st - the start of the season isn’t very far away - are you ready to start your title defence?

I will see how it goes! It’s early in the season and you never know…But Im ready to have some fun thats for sure. Having an extra event on the calendar its always AWESOME.

Have you been to Moulay and Morocco before?

Yes. Long time ago to visit Boujmaa with some friends. There was a ferry from the Canary Islands to Morocco and we took our vans and had an awesome trip. Great food, great people and incredible conditions.

Will you be heading there early to get in tune with the conditions?

I’m lucky to live in Canary Islands. In winter we don’t have so much wind but when low pressures come we have incredible conditions all over the islands. From port tack to starboard tack conditions. onshore and side, offshore etc… It’s a great place for training. We are only 100km away from Morocco and we probably get the same low pressures!

As a starboard tack event and the reigning world champion - most people would put you as the favourite for the event - how do you feel about that?

I don’t know. I just want to enjoy the new event and go step-by-step. Not looking into anything else.

However, you will also have the likes of Sarah Hauser and some of the other girls including Daida of course - who are used to Starboard tack - so you must still be expecting a strong battle? 

I definitely think that there is a lots of girls sailing good. Great to see! I expect to have my own battle ;)

What will you be doing before the event in Morocco?

Windsurfing, SUP and surfing!! All I do for life…. enjoying it because we only live once.
