TWS Slalom Technique Series Ep 4: Pumping

In the fourth episode of the TWS Slalom Technique Series Jordy Vonk and Marco Lang show you how to pump to make sure you are planing as soon as possible. Sometimes the wind is not very consistent or you are stuck at the mark with other people jibing at the same spot, then it is time to start pumping. In races you will often be fighting for a good spot at the start or leaving early after after jibing, by having the right pumping technique you will have a great advantage on the course, especially in low-wind conditions.

PumpingIt looks very simple and actually it is, if you just get the timing right. The first thing you do is steering downwind while at the same time pushing the sail away from you. Then you start pulling the sail while at the same time you take the pressure of your front foot, which will make your board pop up. By pushing the sail forward and setting pressure on your front foot, the board will glide over the water again and you can start the same cycle again. You will get more power in the sail and slowly start getting faster, soon you can hook in and start planing again. To make sure you start accelarating as quickly as possible, keep the board flat when you start getting more speed.
